Congressman Roy Brent and many lawyers were very dissatisfied when they heard that the film "Facing the Giants" was rated PG instead of G because of its religious content, and wrote to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to ask for an explanation. PG means that it is recommended that the film be watched with parents, and G means that the film is suitable for all ages. In his letter, Roy Brent questioned why the MPAA rated the film as restricted because of its religious content. He even brought out a recent survey by the Harvard School of Public Health, saying that the MPAA's ability to manage sex and violence in movies is getting weaker and weaker. The implication is that the MPAA is "not managing what it should manage, and meddling in what it shouldn't manage." MPAA officials did not respond to the questions raised by Roy Brent and other congressmen and lawyers, but in a letter to Brent, MPAA's Krickman insisted that the film was rated this way not just because of its religious content. He said that if there were any strong topics involving mature content in the film, it would likely be rated PG. "Facing the Giants" discusses pregnancy and other mature topics in a mature way. "The PG rating is because we hope that parents will know what information their children will get from the film before they watch it." Congresswoman Martha was not satisfied with this explanation. She said that they would continue to study the film rating procedures and standards and hoped to hold a hearing this year. Krickman said that the film producers had no objection to such a rating. Producer and marketing vice president Chris said that after the controversy, the film association officials changed their story. Chris said: "When we first communicated, they told us that religious content was one of the reasons for the classification.
