In 1989, it was the 64th year of the Showa era in Japan, but this year did not last long. With the death of the emperor, the short 64th year of the Showa era came to an end in a hurry. And within these limited seven days, a kidnapping case of a young girl occurred somewhere. The kidnappers demanded a huge ransom of 20 million yen and cleverly dealt with the victim's family and the case handlers. Although the victim's father (played by Masatoshi Nagase) paid the ransom as agreed, the kidnappers still brutally killed the girl. As Japan was at a critical moment of transition between the old and new eras, the case code-named "64" did not attract much attention. Even more than ten years later, this unresolved case is still an unforgettable knot for many case handlers. Yoshinobu Mikami (played by Koichi Sato), who was an investigator at the time, is now serving as a publicity officer at the Gunma Prefecture Police Station, dealing with superiors and the media all day long. The deadline for "64" is getting closer and closer, and people seem to have remembered this mysterious case again... This film is adapted from Hideo Yokoyama's mystery novel of the same name.
