Christina (Kathrin Sass) wholeheartedly supports socialist East Germany. Her husband has fled to West Germany, leaving her alone to raise a pair of children, Ariana (Maria Simon) and Alex (Daniel Brühl). In 1989, Alex was arrested for taking to the streets. His mother witnessed this scene and fainted from a heart attack, unconscious for a long time. When she woke up, the country she was familiar with had changed-the Berlin Wall was torn down, and socialism in East Germany collapsed. The doctor said that Christina could not be stimulated anymore. So the son tried every means to create a past world for his mother. As a result, his mother was able to live in the past East Germany: including the clothes of neighbors, TV news, and canned food replaced by Soviet food. However, Alex's good intentions could not conceal the huge real world. Finally, the son told his mother about the changes in East Germany in his own way.
